Why Park Waters Are Hard on Membranes
Reverse-osmosis membranes dislike two things above all: biology and neglect. The waters around Komodo are warm and nutrient-rich, so biofilm grows quickly on any surface the system leaves wet and unflushed. Plankton blooms load the pre-filters; fine volcanic silt in some anchorages does the same. None of this is a reason to avoid running a watermaker here — it is a reason to run it correctly: steady daily use, product-water flushes after each run, and honest pre-filtration ahead of the membrane.
The Flush and Pickle Routines That Save Membranes
Two routines decide membrane life. The fresh-water flush pushes product water through the system after each run, displacing seawater so biofilm never establishes — automatic on newer plants, a taught habit on older ones. Pickling preserves the membrane with a biocide solution whenever the system will sit idle for more than a week or two — exactly what happens during a slip. Clogged 20- and 5-micron cartridges starve the high-pressure pump; a worn boost pump lets pressure sag; seals on the high-pressure pump weep until output falls. Service work therefore walks the water path in order: seawater strainer, boost pump, pre-filter housings, high-pressure pump seals and valves, then the membrane itself, finishing at the product-water plumbing and salinity monitoring. Oil changes on crank-driven pumps and a calibration check on the salinity probe complete the visit. For a plant running most days in Komodo we recommend: pre-filter cartridges checked weekly and changed as pressure differential dictates; pump oil per maker’s hours; a full service visit each season with the high-pressure pump opened as hours require; membranes cleaned when output falls around ten to fifteen percent and replaced when cleaning no longer recovers it — typically every two to five years in this use. Keep a log of product flow and salinity at fixed pressure; the trend line tells the story long before the alarm does.

The usual order of suspects: clogged pre-filters, a tired boost or high-pressure pump, then a fouled membrane. We check pressures through the water path before condemning the membrane — cleaning recovers many, and replacement is the last resort, not the first.
Should I run the watermaker in the harbour at Labuan Bajo?
We advise against making water in busy harbour anchorages. Feed water there carries more silt and biological load than the plant deserves. Make water on passage or in clean park anchorages, and flush with product water afterwards.
What happens to the watermaker during a haul-out?
It gets pickled. Before the vessel comes ashore we circulate preservation solution through the membrane, isolate the seawater side and tag the system. At relaunch we flush, test output and salinity, and hand back a plant that has slept safely through the slip.
